Youth on the Move in Somalia: Perspectives, Vulnerabilities, and Horizons.
Description:
Within the Horn of Africa, effects of intensifying droughts and water scarcity, compounded by extreme poverty, political instability, and economic vulnerability, are driving large-scale displacements and frictions over dwindling resources. Somalia, which has reached 3.8 million displaced people in 2023, is recognized as a hotspot country that urges humanitarian assistance and development interventions to prevent further displacement and provide solutions for the youth and the generations to come. This study uses the International Organization of Migration's (IOM) Flow Monitoring Surveys (FMSs) to investigate the interplay of generational perspectives and the climate-conflict nexus in shaping human mobility patterns across different flow monitoring points in Somalia. Regression-based modelling is employed to examine how climate variability and conflict in the origin areas, along with gender, education and socio-economic background, affect migration intentions among different generations. Notably, the analysis highlights generational variations in migration decisions and experiences, shedding light on the distinct perspectives, vulnerabilities, and horizons of different age cohorts. These findings contribute to a nuanced understanding of generational differences in the context of climate change, conflict, and environmental challenges, and provide insights for designing policies and interventions that address the specific needs and aspirations of the youth on the move in Somalia.

Nzuki, E.; Kenduiywo, B.; Villa, V. (2024) Climate, peace and security workshop: Implementing cross-cutting strategies for climate resilience.
Description:
Climate change is deepening resource-based conflicts in Kenya’s arid north, where communities compete over land and water. To address this, the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT (ABC), through the ClimBeR initiative and in collaboration with the Climate-Smart Agriculture Multi-Stakeholder Platform (CSA-MSP), held a four-day workshop in Turkana County. The event introduced the climate–peace–security nexus, trained local stakeholders, and established Turkana’s CSA-MSP—the 24th in Kenya—to promote climate-smart agriculture as a pathway to peace and food security. Participants co-created strategies on drought resilience, gender inclusion, and sustainable resource management, underscoring that building peace in a changing climate begins with empowering communities to shape their own adaptive solutions.

Participatory mapping for peace and security intervention in Northern Kenya.
Description:
Kenya’s arid and semi-arid counties are facing growing climate and security pressures — from droughts and floods to land disputes and resource-based conflicts. To address these intertwined challenges, the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT (ABC), through its Climate Resilience initiative (ClimBeR), partnered with Humanitarian OpenStreetMap (ESA-Hub) to hold a participatory mapping workshop in Isiolo. Stakeholders from 11 counties identified and validated climate-security hotspots and co-designed local resilience solutions such as land-use planning, drought-resistant seeds, and water harvesting. The initiative highlights how open mapping and community participation can turn data into action for peace and climate resilience
